Ternopil State Medical University students completed an internship at Bahçeşehir University, Turkey

Students of Ternopil State Medical University Faculty of Medicine, Kateryna Bihuniak, Romanna Pavliuk, Kateryna Andrushkevych and Natalia Zakernychna completed practical training at the Bahçeşehir University (BAU) in Istanbul, Turkey.

Bahçeşehir University was founded in 1998, and today is one of the top 3 universities in Turkey. Over 17,000 students are enrolled to Bachelor’s degree programs on ten Faculties, and Master’s degree programs on four. The language of instruction is English. The university employs over 1,000 lecturers. The main BAU campus is located in Istanbul on the European coast of the Bosporus Strait. The University also has branches in Berlin, Toronto, Washington, Hong Kong, Rome, and Boston.

During the internship, students studied clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of disorders such as brain and cranial cavity tumors, injuries of the abdominal cavity, musculoskeletal system, mammary glands, and endocrine diseases.

Overall, the students observed 26 surgical interventions, including laparoscopic cholecystectomy, electrostimulation of the subtalamic nucleus in a patient with Parkinson’s disease (photo 5), transnasal removal of the pituitary gland adenoma, surgery on a brain aneurysm ( photo 6) and depression of the lumbar spinal cord with replacement of the spinal disc, thyroidectomy, partial laparoscopic nephrectomy, and breast surgery.

The students also trained in BAU clinic laboratory. The key area of its ​​activity is cellular therapy, including experimental work and cells cultivation for treatment. A particularly interesting case involved growing external ear cells to repair tympanic membrane (tympanoplasty).

On June 27, 2018, the students met with Bahçeşehir University representatives and the Consul General of Ukraine in Istanbul Maxym Vdovychenko to discuss their training.

Istanbul is Turkey’s largest industrial and cultural center, is located on two continents, Europe and Asia, simultaneously. Here the East and West, Islam and Christianity meet. TSMU students visited Aya Sofia, one of the greatest monuments of Byzantine architecture, and the Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque), one of the most outstanding masterpieces of Islamic and world architecture.

While staying in Istanbul, the students crossed the Bosporus Strait twice a day to get to their training location. The Strait commects the Black Sea and Marmara Sea, separating the Asian part of Turkey (Anatolia) from its European part, Thrace.
