TNMU celebrated the Day of Library Book Collection Workers

In the cozy reading room of TNMU Library of the Ternopil National Medical University, the Day of of Library Book Collection Workers was celebrated under the title “The role of library and reading in the life of young people and students”. The event was attended by the heads and specialists of the libraries of higher educational institutions of Ternopil, as well as the Regional Universal Scientific Library and the Regional Library for the Youth, who exchanged their experience, spoke about urgent problems.

The performances of the students of S.Krushelnytska Ternopil Musical College became a musical gift for the audience. Director of the Regional Universal Scientific Library Vasyl Vitenko and TNMU Vice-Rector for Science, Professor Ivan Klishch greeted the participants.

“The Internet has become the site for experienced people. Only those who know what they are looking for and how to find it. will find it. After all, there is much information in the Internet that the person who has no experience can go astray and receive the wrong data, – Ivan Klishch said. – The main source of knowledge transfer is still the book. In major universities, the library is one of its main departments. We also adhere to this principle, so we try to give our books a great deal of attention, to maximize it. Funds allocated for the purchase of modern literature are a very large item of the university’s budget, but we do it consciously, because modern teaching methods, up-to-date textbooks that are constantly updated should be available to our students, otherwise young people will not be competitive in the labor market. We are glad that we have the wonderful staff of the library that supports all the advanced ideas and constantly develope library”.

At any university in every country, the library is a central part of its functioning. This opinion was highlighted in the speech by Olena Protsiv, TNMU Library Director, who conducted a sociological survey among TNMU students about the role of the library and reading in the student environment. According to the results of the study, Olena Protsiv reached the following conclusions:

– TNMU students actively use the services of the university library;

– most TNMU students do not prefer electronic or print versions and read in both formats. However, for many of them, the main source of information is the printed book;

– reading, as part of educational activity, occupies a leading place in the structure of information needs of TNMU students. Most of them consider reading as a means of learning, self-education and self-improvement;

– the vast majority of TNMU students find the books they need at the university library.

As part of the event, the library staff discussed many actual topics. In particular, the Director of the TNEU L. Kanishchenko Library Kazymyr Voznyi presented an intersting report «Non progredi est regredi (Not going ahead means going back)». In his report, he discussed the major problems of all libraries: insufficient funding, inadequate library legislation, reduced interest in books and reading, and considered ways to address them.

Director of Volodymyr Hnatuik Ternopil National Pedagogical Universoty Scientific Library Iryna Chaika spoke about the work of the library on information support of educational and research activities of the students on the basis of a sociological survey, analyzing the attendance of university libraries and the role of the book (both scientific and artistic) in students’ life .

The Head of the Information Technologies and Electronic Resources Department of the Ternopil Regional Library for Youth Borys Kobylnyk presented a report “Using omnichannel marketing in the library”. In his opinion, to encourage students to visit libraries, they must be motivated, first of all, by different training courses, such as workshops on oratory art, leadership, foreign languages, web programming, sound recording, robotics, yoga.

In general, a very interesting and rich program of event helped the audience to find solutions to many urgent issues and prompted them to search for non-standard answers to the questions that the challenges of the modern world pose to a modern library .
