TNMU has Twinned with the UK University in “Twin For Hope” Partnership Program

UK universities supported Ukrainian universities in a difficult time – during the full-scale military invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Education has an important mission in the reconstruction of Ukraine. For this purpose, a twinning program was launched.

Twinning is a partnership project of Ukrainian educational institutions with educational institutions of the UK and other countries of the world with the aim of preventing “brain drain”, creating conditions for overcoming crisis phenomena and building the higher education system of Ukraine with the account of the best global practices.

The #TwinForHope campaign was launched by UK universities to partner in order to make a positive difference during the humanitarian crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University is a participant of this initiative. Our university cooperates with the University of Manchester, which has offered academic support and training, and also shares teaching and learning materials. There is also a discussion of the prospect of clinical practice in Manchester for senior students in order to meet the growing need for newly qualified doctors in Ukraine.

This partnership involves early collaboration that will provide vital support in the short term so that students can continue their studies and scientists can continue their research.

“When the opportunity to support a fellow medical school came along via the UUK twinning scheme, we were keen to help,” said Professor Margaret Kingston, Director of Undergraduate Medical Studies at The University of Manchester. “It has meant an awful lot to colleagues in Ternopil to receive our support, as their main concern was losing their faculty and students.”

Information about the Twinning Program

Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, more than 95 institutions of higher and professional specialized education of the 1st level have been damaged. At least 9 institutions were completely destroyed. The academic community of higher education institutions carried out a mass evacuation. Some students and teachers today defend Ukraine in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, volunteer battalions, and save the lives of soldiers. The rest continue their studies, teaching or research.

Thanks to the coordination of the efforts of Cormack Consultancy Group, more than 80 partnerships have been built between higher education institutions of Ukraine and the UK. Colleagues from both countries constantly communicate with the aim of developing cooperation.

The involvement of a large number of different organizations enables Ukrainian universities to obtain the latest technologies, resources and financial support for the preservation and reconstruction of universities.

The Twinning partnership has demonstrated the ability of education representatives to come together, support each other and make a difference in people’s lives.

Vivienne Stern, MBE, Chief Executive of Universities UK: “I’m really proud of the way that the UK university sector has stepped up to play its part in the global response to enabling Ukrainian universities to get through this war and hopefully emerge stronger.”

Charles Cormack, Head of the Cormack Consultancy Group: “I’ve never seen universities respond in such an open-hearted way and to pull down the barriers that normally get in the way of a collaboration and just make things happen.”
