TNMU Hosted Conference “European Standards of Diagnosis and Treatment of the Most Common Childhood Diseases”

On May 2-3, 2024, a research and training conference “European standards of diagnosis and treatment of the most common childhood diseases” was held at I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University.

The scientific event was opened by the Vice-Rector for Science, Education and Clinical Affairs, S. Professor, Head of the Department of Paediatrics No. 2, Professor H. Pavlyshyn, Associate Professor of the Department of Paediatrics No. 2 V. Furdela.

This time, the scientific conference “European standards of diagnosis and treatment of the most common childhood diseases” was held on the eve of Easter. With the parental blessing of Rzeszów University professor Artur Mazur, the conference became a good tradition of Ukrainian-Polish cooperation. Prominent Polish experts – Professor Artur Mazur (University of Rzeszów), Professor Barbara Krolak-Olejnik (Wrocław Medical University), Professor Maria Wilinska, Professor Dorota Bulsiewicz, Professor Justyna Cheh-Kowalska ( Justyna Czech-Kowalska) (Warsaw), Professor Livio Provenzi (University of Pavia, Italy) shared their knowledge, scientific and practical experience.

The first day of the conference was dedicated to topical and important issues of neonatology, improvement of medical care for children with infectious diseases. As part of the conference, a workshop “Diagnostic algorithms in children with exanthems: analysis of clinical cases” was held.

Conference participants had the opportunity to meet and ask questions of leading specialists, experts in neonatology – the president of the Association of Neonatologists of Ukraine, the corresponding member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Professor T. Znamenska, the leading specialist of the NHSU, Professor O. Kovaliova, Professor S. Dudnyk ., Head of the Ternopil branch of the Association of Neonatologists of Ukraine, Professor H. Pavlyshyn, DSc in Medicine. I. Sarapuk.

The participants were specifically interested in the reports by such well-known scientists as Professor T. Znamenska, Professor N. Hoida (P. Shupyk National University of Health Care of Ukraine), General Director of Ternopil Regional Clinical Children’s Hospital H. Korytskyi, Medical Director of Ternopil Regional Clinical Children’s Hospital, A. Filiuk, Head of the Department of Paediatrics No. 2, Professor H. Pavlyshyn, DSc I. Sarapuk.

A well-known lecturer from the Paediatric Neuroscience Centre of the University of Pavia (Italy), Professor Livio Provenzi spoke about the pathogenetic mechanisms of the importance of mother and child staying together, starting from the neonatal period, the impact of their relationship on the genetic basis of the child’s development.

The Head of the Department of Neonatology of the Wroclaw Medical University, Professor Barbara Krolak-Olejnik, introduced the updated standards of medical care to newborns in Poland to Ukrainian colleagues.

Professor Maria Wilinska, a researcher at the Centre for Postgraduate Education (Warsaw), shared interesting and practical information about modern approaches to breastfeeding children with various maternal and infant diseases.

The Head of the Children’s Endocrinology and Diabetology Clinic of the College of Medical Sciences of the University of Rzeszów (Poland), Professor Artur Mazur, spoke about the practical aspects of the causes, diagnosis and management of hypoglycaemia in newborn babies.

The team of authors of the department of neonatology and intensive care of newborns of the Children’s Memorial Institute of Health Care in Warsaw (Poland), Professor Dorota Bulsiewicz and Professor Justyna Czech-Kowalska shared their experience in the diagnosis and treatment of ventricular dilatations in newborns.

Interesting clinical cases with issues of diagnosis and differential diagnosis were discussed at the workshop “Diagnostic algorithms in children with exanthems: analysis of clinical cases.”

The second day of the conference was devoted to the optimization of medical care for children with non-infectious pathologies, innovative methods of treatment and prevention of somatic diseases of childhood. As part of the second day of the conference, an offline workshop “Initial and resuscitation care for newborns” was held. Professor O. Synoverska O. spoke about the features of reactive arthritis in children, their diagnostic criteria and treatment. Associate Professor I. Avramenko focused attention on important signs of ventricular rhythm disturbances as predictors of sudden death in children. Professor N. Makeieva presented an interesting report “Thrombocytopenia in children: what a paediatrician should know” with a presentation of interesting clinical cases.

Much attention was paid at the conference to the early diagnosis of endocrine pathology in children and their prevention measures. Associate Professor V. Furdela presented the report on “Masks of diabetes in the practice of a primary care doctor”, Associate Professor A.-M. Shulhai showed the important role of endocrine disruptors in the emergence of the obesity pandemic, Associate Professor K. Kozak spoke about modern trends in dietary nutrition for children. Associate Professor of TNMU Department of Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology and Neurosurgeons P. Hudak presented the results of his own experience in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases of the spine in children and adolescents. Associate Professor V. Slyva focused the attention of paediatricians on the diagnostic criteria of bronchial obstruction in young children with modern approaches to treatment.

In total, during the meetings, 28 scientific reports were presented and discussed, 8 poster reports were presented. More than 400 participants from various medical institutions of Ukraine took part in the conference.

Professor H. Pavlyshyn thanked the administration of the university for the support and organization of the scientific event, the guests and participants of the conference for their active cooperation, deep respect and gratitude to the defenders, who provided a peaceful sky and comfortable conditions for active learning, raising the professional level.
