TNMU Hosted Scientific Symposium “Rational Management and Pharmaceutical Care of Patients with Comorbidities in General Medical Practice”

On December 14-15, 2023, I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University held a scientific symposium with international participation “Rational management and pharmaceutical care of patients with comorbidities in general medical practice”. The event was organized by the staff of the Departments of Therapy and Family Medicine of TNMU Faculty of Medicine (Head – Professor Liliya Babinets) and TNMU Department of Clinical Pharmacy of the Faculty of Pharmacy (Head – Professor Olena Samohalska).


More than 500 participants took part in the scientific symposium, including doctors and pharmacists from different cities of Ukraine, senior students and interns. The meeting participants listened to 42 reports of scientists and clinicians from Ternopil, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Chernihiv, Chernivtsi, Lviv, Uzhhorod, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Poltava. Presentations were made by British academics Dr. Abraham Thomas, Clinical Lead of the Association for Collaborative Medical Education in the UK (“Mind over Metter: a guide to improving memory for GPs”) and Professor Michael Harris (“Family Medicine in the UK “).

Leading specialists of TNMU presented to doctors, interns and senior students new guidelines for the management of patients with various most common nosologies, focused on rational management and pharmaceutical care. The importance of this direction of medical practice was emphasized in the welcome speech by TNMU Vice-Rector for Research, Professor Ivan Klishch.

Professor Liliya Babinets delivered a presentation on the current aspects of the management of a patient with arterial hypertension with comorbidity according to the new 2023 recommendations, as well as on the modern possibilities of correcting exocrine pancreatic insufficiency of various genesis according to the new European standards.


Professor Olena Samohalska told the audience about the new European regulations regarding non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The information of Professor Oleksandra Oleshchuk about the new regulations for the rational use of antibacterial and antifungal drugs for therapeutic and preventive purposes (order of the Ministry of Health No. 1513) was extremely relevant.

Associate Professor Larysa Martynyuk spoke about the latest evidence-based data regarding the management of pregnant women with pregestational and gestational diabetes. Professor Halyna Pavlyshyn reported on the current aspects of the modern classification of AWaRe antibiotics as a tool for assessment, monitoring and management in paediatric practice. Associate Professor Victoria Furdela highlighted new diagnostic and treatment perspectives on comorbidity in childhood obesity. Professor Igor Hospodarskyy focused the attention of the participants on the problem of hepatotoxicity of drugs in comorbid patients. Associate Professor Andriy Mysak’s report was devoted to new possibilities for diagnosing prostate cancer. Professor Liliya Martynyuk presented the new standards of management of chronic kidney disease according to the 2023 recommendations.

The reports of scientists and clinicians from other medical universities were interesting and relevant.

Participants of the scientific event, doctors of Ukraine and students of TNMU, noted the high level of pedagogical and clinical competence of Ternopil scientists.

It is worth noting that such events provide educational, practically-oriented opportunities for obtaining new modern knowledge, not only for practicing doctors, but also for future clinicians and clinical pharmacists – senior students of medical and pharmaceutical faculties.
