TNMU hosted the All-Ukrainian scientific-practical conference “Medical and Social Problems of Childhood”

On October 24, 2019, the All-Ukrainian scientific-practical conference “Medical and Social Problems of Childhood” was held at I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University.

The scientific-practical conference was organized by the staff of TNMU Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery.

The event included two plenary sessions (“Evidence-based medicine in pediatrician practice” and “Medical-social aspects of chronic diseases in children”), two section meetings (“Respiratory pathology in children” and “A one-year old child at the family doctor’s appointment”), four workshops (Vaccination with a disrupted calendar of preventive vaccinations, Diagnosis and correction of chronic protein energy deficiency in children with severe somatic pathology, Otoscopy in children, and Structured critical assessment of child’s critical condition and an algorithm for stabilizing such a patient).

The Conference was attended by 170 participants, pediatricians, general practitioners, pediatric specialists, interns.

On behalf of TNMU Rector, Professor Mykhaylo Korda, Vice-Rector for Science, Professor Ivan Klishch addressed to the participants of the Conference. Professor Klishch drew attention to the relevance of the suggested topic of the Conference, with its two components – medical and social, which are very important at the present stage of development of pediatrics. 

The Deputy Head of the Ternopil Regional Health Care Administration Lidiia Chaikovska welcomed the participants and noted that the Ternopil Region was actively involved in the reform of primary and secondary healthcare in Ukraine. Now every patient has the right to choose the medical institution where they want to be treated, they can choose their own doctors. Depending on where the patient will be treated, the National Health Service of Ukraine will transfer the funds there. Lidiia Chaikovska also wished fruitful work to the participants of the Conference.

Oksana Boiarchuk, Head of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of Ternopil National Medical University opened the first meeting of the Conference. She focused on the use of systemic antibiotics in Europe, spoke about the etiology of the current stage of pharyngitis, tonsillitis, acute otitis media, pneumonia in children, outlined the principles of rational antibiotic therapy for these diseases.

Head of the Department of Pediatrics No. 5 of Bogomolets National Medical University, Professor Viktor Lukashuk, in his report spoke about indications for anti-helicobacterial therapy in children based on the recommendations of ESPGHAN, its main principles, taking into account the risks and benefits of various drugs. The speaker also noted that it is recommended to determine the sensitivity of H. pylori to antimicrobial agents prior to anti-helicobacter therapy.

Natalia Balatska, Doctor of Medical Sciences of Bogomolets National Medical University, informed the audience about the current pathogenesis, the clinic of protein-energy deficiency in children, its impact on various functions of the organism, the course of the underlying disease.

Assistant Professor of the Department of Pediatrics of Postgraduate Education, Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University, Tamara Berezina, spoke about the implementation of international protocols for the treatment of bronchitis in the practice of pediatrician, and also focused on the diagnosis and treatment of histamine-induced intolerance syndrome.

An interesting report on the relevance of respiratory infection in children, infectious signs of immunodeficiency, the possibility of nonspecific immunocorrection was made by Professor of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University Ihor Hospodarskyi.

The etiology, clinical picture, therapeutic tactics for acute intestinal infections in children, the role of probiotics on the basis of evidence-based medicine were discussed by the Head of the Department of Pediatrics of TNMU Institute of Postgraduate Training Nataliia Banadyha.

Associate Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University Liubov Volianska made an interesting report on the implementation of the world experience of re-hydration therapy of acute intestinal infections in children in the practice of Ukrainian family medicine.

The Head of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University, Professor Oksana Boiarchuk in her report spoke about the causes, clinical picture, diagnostics of chronic cough in children, stressed on recommendations for the treatment of chronic cough syndrome.

Tuberculosis problems among children and adolescents in the Ternopil region were discussed by Professor of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University Leonid Hryshchuk.

Issues of vaccination of children with chronic diseases, contraindications, warnings, immune response to vaccination were discussed by Assistant Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases with Pediatric Surgery of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University Liubov Volianska.

In their report, Assistant Lesia Dobrovolska and Associate Professor Tetiana Hariian spoke about smoking and vaping in children, their prevalence according to conducted surveys among school-age children, their negative impact on respiratory organs. The social video created by the 1st and 6th year students of our university about the harmfulness of viping aroused great interest of the participants.

Associate Professor of TNMU Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery Oleksandra Shulhai presented an interesting report on the types, pathogenesis, causes of fever in children, methods of measuring body temperature, tactics of treating children with fever.

The Head of the Department of Psychiatry, Narcology and Medical Psychology of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University, Professor Olena Wenher presented a report on burnout syndrome in doctors, focused on the main methods of prevention and correction of this condition.

Olha Rusanovska from Uzhgorod National University focused on the problem of jaundice in newborns, causes, clinical picture, diagnostics and treatment methods.

Tetiana Hariian, Associate Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of Ternopil National Medical University, spoke on the problem of food allergy and milk intolerance in children of all ages, outlining diagnostic criteria, ways of correction of these conditions.

Mykhaylo Protsailo, Associate Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases with Pediatric Surgery, presented an interesting report on hip joint dysplasia in children, its diagnostics and treatment methods.

Associate Professor of the Department of Children’s Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University Mariia Kinash in her report highlighted the issue of feeding children of the first year of life in accordance with modern guidelines on child nutrition.
