TNMU Representatives Participated in the 12th International Congress of Joint European Neonatal and Perinatal Societies

The 12th International Congress of the Union of European Neonatal and Perinatal Societies (12th International Congress of UENPS) was held in Krakow (Poland) on September 2-4, 2022. Its main purpose was to improve the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in newborns, to optimize antenatal intervention to reduce prematurity, update of European approaches to the delivery room. The event was attended by more than 100 countries, representatives of UENPS – the Union of European Neonatal and Perinatal Societies, EFCNI – the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants, as well as the Association of Neonatologists of Ukraine. The latter was headed by its president, Professor T. K. Znamenska, and was also represented by the teachers of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University, Professor Halyna Pavlyshyn and Associate Professor Iryna Sarapuk.

At the 12th International Congress of the Union of European Neonatal and Perinatal Societies (12th International Congress of UENPS), a significant event took place – the acceptance of the Association of Neonatologists of Ukraine into a European scientific institution with the approval of its president, Professor Corrado Moretti.

The program of the 12th International Congress of UENPS included E-poster reports “Experience of preterm infants care in Ukraine and Poland”, “Preterm infant and melatonin: what are the peculiarities?”, “Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on the level of parental stress in the NICU”, which gave an opportunity to discuss the results of the research with European specialists and experts.

At the Congress, special attention was paid to the issue of reducing adverse early and long-term consequences of premature birth, new recommendations of ILCOR and ERS on resuscitation measures in the delivery room were presented.

Experts on the problems of neonatology presented modern approaches to the treatment of neonatal sepsis, NEC, cytomegalovirus infection in newborns of different gestational ages, which improve long-term consequences.

The report “Coalition for preemies – we help Polish parents of preemies and rescue Ukrainian NICUs” by Professor Maria Katarzyna Borszewska-Kornacka (Poland) at the XII International Congress of the Union of European Neonatal and Perinatal Societies presented the work of the volunteer centre, which with its activity and sincerity was able to provide 26 neonatal centres of Ukraine with the necessary equipment, medicines, personal care products in a difficult time for Ukraine, and thereby touched all the participants of the world forum.

 

The participants of the Congress paid specific attention to the issue of the care of babies in intensive care units during the period of COVID-19, the adverse consequences that arise as a result of the separation of mother and baby, and the importance of restoring family-oriented care during the period of COVID infection, the active involvement of parents in the intensive care unit, starting from the first day of life, which improves neurological development and reduces long-term cognitive and behavioural impairments. The Congress presented the results of an international study (2,103 participants from 56 countries) on the challenges associated with the pandemic in the care of premature babies and, accordingly, the main additions to the “European standards of care for the health of new-borns”, developed by the European Foundation for Neonatal Care (EFCNI), chaired by Ms. Silke Mader.

Participation in the 12th International Congress of the Union of European Neonatal and Perinatal Societies provides an opportunity to raise the qualification and professional level in the field of neonatology, and to share experience regarding the care of premature babies in Ukraine. At the same time, establishing and expanding personal contacts at the international neonatological event will contribute to the development of international cooperation, creative communication and integration of the university into the global scientific environment.

The participants express their deepest appreciation to the administration of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University and the president of the Children’s Medical Care Foundation (CMCF) Bjoern Martinoff and the vice-president of CMCF Jolanta Martinoff for their support, assistance, and the opportunity to participate in the 12th International Congress of the Union of European Neonatal and Perinatal Societies (12th International Congress of UENPS) and present the results of our scientific research at an international event.
