TNMU scholar presented Ternopil National Medical University at the International Conference Options X for Control of Influenza

On August 28 – September 1, 2019 International Conference Options X for control of INFLUENZA was held in Singapore. More than 1500 participants from different countries participated in the work of the Conference. The conference proceedings contain more than 2000 scientific reports. The competition for the grant (Bill and Melinda Gates Fundation, USA) was successfully passed by 40 young scientists from the whole world. One of them was Assistant of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology of Ternopil National Medical University Yaryna Yosyk.

International Society for Influenza and Other Respiratory Virus Diseases (ISIRV), an international organization that deals with respiratory infections, organizes large-scale meetings every 3 years. It is headed by Prof. Lance Jennings (Chair, ISIRV).

Conference Opening Ceremony

Under the auspices of this organization School of Influenza for young scientists, headed by Prof. Rebecca Cox (University of Bergen, Norway) was held.  Within the framework of the School, a number of lectures were given by prominent scholars on the field of medicine:

– Influenza (past and present) with focus on human influenza and diagnosis (Professor Fred Hayden, University of Virginia School of Medicine, USA);

– Influenza at the human animal interface (Prof. Malik Peiris, HKU School of Public Health, Hong Kong);

– Influenza Vaccines and Immune Correlates of Protection (Prof. Rebecca Cox, University of Bergen, Norway);

– Next Generation ‘Universal’ Vaccines (Prof. Florian Krammer, Icahn School of Medicine, USA).

Yaryna Yosyk with Prof. Fred Hayden, University of Virginia School of Medicine, USA, Chairman of the ISIRV Scientific Committee.

In Singapore, Yaryna Yosyk made a presentation on “Yeasts Ribonucleic Acid Efficiency in a Treatment of Patients with Acute Respiratory Infectious” (Scientific Project supervisor – Academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Prof. M. A. Andreichyn). These materials have been published in the collection of papers “Options X for control of Influenza” (08.28 – 09.09.2019, Singapore). Three poster sessions were held during which our scientist’s paper aroused great interest and discussion.

At the Conference papers reflecting various topical issues were presented, such as the clinical features and course of influenza and other respiratory infections in different countries, current methods of laboratory diagnostics, tactics of treatment and control of influenza and other respiratory diseases, as well as the effectiveness of antiviral drugs, the problem of the development of drug resistance and effectiveness of new generation of influenza vaccines. Statistical reports on influenza and other respiratory illnesses are presented in reports from the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) and WHO (World Health Organization). Particular attention is paid to the problem of vaccination and the effectiveness of the influenza vaccine.

Within the framework of the Conference a series of thematic meetings was held:

  • Pathogenesis & Transmission virus
  • Clinical Sciences
  • Immune Response to Infection
  • Vaccine Efficacy / Effectiveness
  • Co-Infection
  • Influenza Glycobiology
  • Surveillance & Forecasting
  • NextGen / Universal Vaccines
  • Cellular and Molecular Virology
  • Avian and Zoonotic Influenza
  • Severity Infection
  • Influenza in the Tropics
  • Host-pathogen Interactions
  • Policy Perspectives for the Prevention and Control of Seasonal Influenza

Ass. Yaryna Yosyk expresses her sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the administration of the I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University for the opportunity to participate in an international conference and to present the results of our research at the international levels.
