TNMU scholars visited Egypt to expand international cooperation

Within the framework of cooperation agreement between I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University and Mansoura University (Egypt), on February 14-20, 2020, a delegation of the Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Liliya Logoyda, Associate Professor of the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology, Head of the Research Office Oksana Shevchuk, Associate Professor of the Department of Pharmacy Management, Economy and Technology Olena Pokotylo and Associate Professor of the Department of Microbiology, Virology and Immunology Olena Pokryshko visited Mansoura University.

El Mansour University was founded in 1972 in the city of El Mansura (the administrative center of the governorate of Dakahlia, with a population of more than 5 million people). The Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1962 as a branch of Cairo University. Mansoura University is located in the center of the Nile Delta in Egypt. It is one of the largest Egyptian universities that has made a major contribution to cultural and scientific life in Egypt.

The Mansoura University has the following faculties: Medical, Pedagogical, Faculty of Research, Pharmaceutical, Dental, Commerce, Law, Faculty of Art, Agriculture, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, Physical Education, Computer Engineering and Information, Faculty of Fine Arts.

On the territory of the University there is all the infrastructure for comfortable stay of students in the academic campus: mosque, libraries, Olympic sports complex, stadium, central canteen, restaurants, stationary shops, student hospital etc. The campus is divided into three student accommodation complexes: the city of Alamal (for men), the city of Alzahraa and the city of Gehan (for women).

Mansoura University is known for its specialized medical centers that provide both medical and educational services. These include Mansoury University Hospital, Children’s Hospital, Specialized Hospital for Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology Center, Gastroenterology Center, Urology and Nephrology Centers. The latter is the largest among those in Africa.

TNMU representatives met with the Vice President of Graduate Studies & Research at Mansoura University, Professor Ashraf Tarek Hafez.

 

The co-ordinators of cooperation are Doctor of Pharmacy, Head of TNMU Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry Liliya Logoyda from the Ukrainian side, and Professor of the Department of Medical Chemistry, Hussein El-Subbagh from Mansoura University.

During their stay at Mansoura University, our representatives were able to get acquainted with the peculiarities of the educational process in Egypt. It is one of the largest universities in Egypt, with more than 150,000 students enrolled in 22 faculties, and almost 10,000 students at the Faculty of Pharmacy. This year, the University was ranked number one in the country by one of the most famous ranking systems – The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020.

The delegation visited the Department of Electron Microscopy, headed by Professor Yasser Shabana.

  

They also visited a stem cell biology laboratory headed by Professor Faraha El-Shennawy, the bone marrow transplant center and cord blood bank, the Stem Cells Bank.

   

The delegation also visited the Faculty of Pharmacy. There was a meeting with the Dean, Professor Manal Mohamed Ibrahim Eid to discuss the areas of future cooperation.

 

They visited the Department of NMR Spectroscopy of the Faculty of Pharmacy, headed by Professor Hussein El-Subbagh.

Associate Professor Olena Pokryshko made a presentation on “Physiology of Microorganisms, the Growth Curve Microbial Metabolism” within the 6th Scientific Conference of Microbiology and Immunology Department (15-16th February 2020).

 

Dr. Olena Pokryshko got acquainted with the work of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and met with the Head of the Department, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Professor Rasha Barouh. The task of the teachers and their assistants was to disseminate basic knowledge in microbiology, molecular biology, industrial biotechnology, microbial genetics, immunology, parasitology, biotechnology, microbial diseases and their treatment, sterility control in pharmacy. The staff of the department work on the issues of molecular biology, biotechnology, mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, immunology. Their area of ​​interest is the study of the effect of antibacterial drugs on microorganisms, the development of their resistance to antibiotics and the identification of ways to improve their effectiveness; isolation and comparison of microbes from different clinical and environmental sources; assisting researchers in the field of pharmaceutical, organic, analytical, and medicinal chemistry in elucidating the chemical structure of organic and natural materials using an NMR device for the development and discovery of medicinal products. Future masters conduct their own research on pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses (including bacteriophages), and develop teaching schemes for important pharmaceutical products under the guidance of the teachers.

During the visit, the following lectures were delivered by TNMU professors: “Analysis of the Quality of Indole, Imidazole, Benzimidazole, Pyrazole Containing Drugs” by Liliya Logoyda, “Pharmacology of Anti-Inflammatory Drugs” by Oksana Shevchuk, “Fundamentals of Health Technology Assessment Process” by Olena Pokotylo.

Professor of the Department of Clinical Pharmaceutical Practice, Mohamed El Houseny El Sebeay Shams, shared his experience in pharmacoeconomics, pharmacovigilance, and an innovative methodological approach in the healthcare system – medical technology assessment. He invited Ukrainian scientists to effective cooperation, exchange of ideas, prognosis of prospects of joint scientific activity in this field.

It was also possible to visit the Urology and Nephrology Center, the WHO Collaborating Center, which is unique and the largest in the Middle East.

   

TNMU teachers were given the unique opportunity to interact with world-renowned scientist Heham Sallam, who discovered a new species of dinosaur and named it after his hometown – Mansurazaurus.

 

The visit will further develop a joint research project in the fields of pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacoeconomics and pharmaceutical microbiology.
