TNMU scientist attended the course of continuous medical education of the European Renal Association – European Dialysis and Transplant Association

On January 16-18, 2020, ERA-EDTA European Renal Osteodystrophy (EUROD) Winter meeting 2020, organized by the CKD-MBD Scientific Working Group of the Association, took place in Leven (Belgium) as part of  Continuing Medical Education .

The scientific program of the event covered the main theoretical and practical aspects of the problem of mineral and bone disorders in chronic kidney disease, based on the current knowledge and the latest achievements of science on fundamental cross mechanisms of bone and vascular remodeling, ways of diagnosis , cardiovascular calcification as markers of accelerated aging syndrome, predictors of decreased quality and life expectancy in the specified category of patients.

The course format included lecturing and systematic analysis of research findings on key topics of chronic kidney disease, development of preventive and anti-aging medicine, participation in the EUROD research forum, two CME courses, including “Vitamins and oxidative stress on the cross-roads of bone and vessels ”and“ The challenge of osteoporosis in CKD ”, reviewing complex clinical cases with worldwide experts. The event is accredited by EACCME, the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

Speakers were well known experts from Belgium, the Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Portugal, Italy, Germany.

The following issues were discussed at the event:

• Vitamin D in bone and vascular remodeling in the case of CKD. The theoretical substantiation of the role of vitamin D metabolism disturbance, in particular 1,25 (OH) 2D deficiency, in the pathogenesis of CKD syndrome is presented, its relation with FGF23 content, parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentration, serum phosphate levels are shown. 
• Vitamin K in bone and vascular remodeling in the case of CKD. Emphasis is placed on vitamin K deficiency as a factor in the development of ectopic calcification and renal osteodystrophy, since the carboxylation of matrix Gla protein (MGP) and osteocalcin in conditions of chronic renal dysfunction is significantly impaired. 
• Oxidative stress in bone and vascular remodeling in the case of CKD. The importance and expediency of development of the problem of oxidative damage of the vascular wall, intima of the arteries, endothelial cells and their role in the mediation of vascular calcification, structural and functional restructuring of cardiomyocytes and coronary arteries, formation of myocardial fibrosis were determined.
• The role of regulators of mineral metabolism (PTH, Klotho, FGF23), hyperphosphatemia, hypercalcemia, hypomagnesemia in CKD has been determined. The key role of OPG / RANKL / RANK defect in the mechanisms of bone and vascular remodeling were determined.
• Diagnosis of renal osteodystrophy in CKD. The gold standard for the diagnosis of anomalies of bone turnover rate, mineralization or bone volume, bone growth or density is the biopsy of the trabecular iliac bone. 

This event is a model of a fundamental, systemic, integrative approach to the solution of the problem of mineral and bone disorders in CKD, in particular renal osteodystrophy and cardiovascular calcification, mechanisms of accelerated aging, aimed at finding early biomarkers, new effective diagnostics and new therapeutic options.

Obtained information, exchange of experience during the European Renal Osteodystrophy (EUROD) Winter meeting 2020 of ERA – EDTA Continuing Medical Education course will enable optimization of methods of early diagnosis and treatment of mineral and bone disorders in CKD, introduction of new knowledge in the educational process of medical university, and will also facilitate the development of transdisciplinary research and the further integration of the university into the global scientific environment.

Upon completion of the training program, all participants received ERA-EDTA and EACCME certificates.
