TNMU Students Informed Ternopil Pupils About the Dangers of Tuberculosis

On December 16, 2021, Maksym Filipchak, a student of TNMU, talked on the issues of tuberculosis prevention in Ukraine with pupils of N. Yaremchuk Lyceum School No. 6.

The aim of the lesson was to inform the 8th form students about the urgency of the issue of tuberculosis spread among the population, about the disease, ways of its transmission, the first symptoms and methods of prevention. After all, according to the Ministry of Health only in 2020, 17,593 cases of the disease were registered in Ukraine. The WHO reports that one third of the world population is infected with tuberculosis. Not only social conditions, but also the biological properties of mycobacteria have caused an epidemic of tuberculosis at present. High resistance of mycobacteria and their droplet-air route of transmission complicate the fight against tuberculosis. In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the issue of spread of tuberculosis is really urgent.

The lesson was divided into several parts. Firstly, some questions were asked to the pupils to find out their existing knowledge of tuberculosis to determine their awareness and further emphasis. The next stage was a mini-lecture in the format of communication; the pupils learned all the necessary information and also asked about anything interesting for them on that topic. The final stage was watching of informative videos of SAWBO “TB prevention” and “The difference between open and closed forms of tuberculosis”.

The pupils were very interested in the relationship between the disease and tobacco smoking as well as e-cigarettes, and the mechanism of reducing of the body’s resistance to infectious diseases due to stress.
