The staff of I.Horbachevsky Ternopil State Medical University deeply sorrows about the loss, because Hennadii Vasyliovych cooperated closely with our university for many years. The famous scientist was an honorary professor of TSMU.

Hennadii Knyshov for the first time in Ukraine has applied surgical correction of tachysystolic forms of cardiac arrhythmias. He developed an original theory of the origin of obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and on its basis he proposed a promising method of treating it with the use of three-chamber pacing. For the first time in the world he proved the role of low immune status in the development of acute infective endocarditis and proposed and implemented the technique of artificial rise of body temperature of the patient, proved its role as the trigger of the patient’s immune system stimulation (with this method more than 2 thousands patients were operated on with the lowest mortality rate in the world, and relapse rates – five times lower than in other clinics around the world). Academician G. Knyshov personally developed and widely implemented in Ukraine: the method of temporary coronary perfusion on the basis of which implantation of artificial aortic valve became possible, the apparatus for removing blood clots from the left atrium on a beating heart, thus preventing thromboembolic complications; method of retrograde myocardial preservation and heart protection in patients with coronary heart disease with a completely blocked coronary vessels, enabling the implementation of bypass surgery in critically ill patients; carried out the elimination of complex cardiac arrhythmias using low temperature (minus 70) ablation with extracorporeal circulation.

Since 1989 he was the Director of Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery. During the years of his running the institute, a School for Cardiac Surgery was established, which deals with all types of cardiovascular disorders.

Academician Hennadii Knyshov’s achievements in development of Ukrainian medical science are recognized in Ukraine and all over the world. He received high state awards for his scientific and social activities: the Hero of Ukraine title and the Order of “The State”, Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, IV, V degree.

His life was an example of selfless service to Ukraine and persistent hard work of the surgeon and scientist.

We sincerely share the grief of the loss of an outstanding person and express our compassion and support.
