TSMU rector took part in the round table discussion in Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on Public Health

On February 14th Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on Public Health held a round table meeting “Status and perspectives of medical education in Ukraine”. Professor Mykhaylo Korda, rector of Ternopil State Medical University, took part in the event.

The main goal of the meeting was to discuss the issues facing the Ukrainian medical education system. The participants noted that it would be impossible to reform the health system and bring it to international standards without changing the basic paradigm of secondary and higher medical education in Ukraine.

Some of the issues discussed were the state of national system of higher medical education; training of junior specialists; status and prospects of higher pharmaceutical and dental education; medical personnel training for the Armed Forces of Ukraine; the reform of postgraduate education of doctors. Also discussed were questions of training health care managers and public health professionals and the procedure of recognition of diplomas obtained at foreign universities in Ukraine.

Ternopil State Medical University Rector, Professor Mykhaylo Korda spoke about TSMU’s achievements in distance teaching of bachelors and masters in nursing. He underscored prospects of distance education of nurses and presented a number of proposals for further improvements in medical distance.

Event participants agreed that modern medicine is a rapidly developing field, and medical practitioners are always on lookout for new methods of treatment, disease diagnosis and the use of advanced information technologies. Because of this, academic programs training future doctors should be based on European standards and protocols for treatment of diseases, the use of ICT and provide opportunity to master practical skills needed to operate the latest medical and diagnostic equipment. Pre- and postgraduate academic training of health care professionals should make use of modern telemedicine technologies so that professionals could study and work in within common European medical field.

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Healthcare Olha Bohomolets informed the participants of the round table that the Parliament of Ukraine will hold parliamentary hearings “Medical education in Ukraine: a look into the future” on  22 March 2017 and urged all participants to join drafting guidelines for the hearings.
