TSMU researcher interns at the University of Perugia (Italy)
Post-graduate Halyna Ostrovska from TSMU department of pharmacology with clinical pharmacology trained from December 2, 2015 to May 30, 2016 on a PhD program at the University of Perugia (Università degli Studi di Perugia), Italy as a part of the programme of academic mobility Erasmus Mundus MEDEA.

This university is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Italy. It was founded in 1308. The University has received international recognition in 1355, when the Emperor Charles I pledge Perugia to support the University and gave it the right to issue diplomas to the students of all nationalities.
Today the University of Perugia offers a wide range of educational programs covering almost all academic areas. The teaching process combines a strong classic tradition of teaching with desire for innovation and interdisciplinary approach, providing the students with favorable environment to achieve high level of education and training. Postgraduate study programs in most of the popular fields offer Master’s and PhD curricula that involve both basic sciences and innovation.
The University of Perugia has signed agreements with 361 universities of the European Union to participate in the Erasmus programme, and also has some 90 cooperation agreements with European and non-European institutions to develop joint initiatives in research and education.
In total the University of Perugia trains about 30 students from around the world on its Erasmus Mundus programmes each year. In particular, undergraduate and graduate students in medicine and pharmacology from the Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia and Moldova participate in the project “Alliance of Medical Universities – Erasmus Mundus MEDEA”, which started in 2013.

- Division of Biochemical Sciences and Health (supervisor – Professor Massimo Moretti)
- Division of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology (supervisor – Professor Maria Carla Marcotullio).”

The main areas of research of the Faculty of Pharmacy are:
- extraction of bioactive substances from plant materials and studies of their qualitative and quantitative content;
- chemical synthesis of new drugs;
- investigation of pharmacological activity in vivo and in vitro (using human and animal cell cultures).
The results are used to develop new drugs, particularly for the treatment of cancer and neurological diseases.
“During my internship, I conducted a series of pharmacological studies of genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of lyophilized extract of fireweed (Chamerion angustifolium) using cell culture of human liver Hep G2.”
