TSMU students mastered the craft of Easter egg painting

On the eve of Easter holidays, Ternopil State Medical University staff, clinical residents, domestic and international students and students of the preparation department attended a master class on traditional Easter egg decoration.

Young people from Ecuador, Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Portugal, Egypt and Palestine learned Ukrainian folk techniques for decorating Easter eggs. Their instructors were members of the NGO Union of Ukrainian Youth. They talked about the history of patterns traditionally used on Easter eggs, special paints, tools and techniques in use in different regions of Ukraine. Each participant of the master class made their own pysanka using wax and dyes.

The task required concentration and hard work: keeping pencils steady, making straight, choosing the pattern, but also allowed for creativity resulting in truly original pysanka eggs. At the end of the master class everyone was satisfied with their work and took their own painted masterpieces to share with their parents and friends.

The students really enjoyed this event, especially since it was the first time they worked with this particular craft. It was a good opportunity to get a hands-on experience with Ukrainian culture and traditions.

Organizers of the master class were representatives of TSMU Center for Academic and Cultural Development Marta Rudenko and Olena Pokryshko.

Lesia Holyk, a member of the Union of Ukrainian Youth, told that she is always happy to share her pysanka painting skills and knowledge of the symbolism of Ukrainian Easter eggs. “As soon as I have a free minute, I immediately get to work with Easter eggs. For me it is relaxation, fun, and an interesting lesson all at once. Creating Easter eggs is always fascinating. I am very pleased that students from different countries also liked this craft. I noticed that they had a lot of fun choosing the patterns and drawing every part”, – said Lesia Holyk.
