“On behalf of the Academic Board and the teaching staff of the University, I congratulate you on this significant event in your life. Today you get a ticket to an independent life. Go back in your mind to a time 5-6 years ago. Remember the solemn hall of the Palace of Culture “Berezil” filled with happy smiles of new students of our university. They have just been matriculated. Then it seemed to you that training will be so long. You would agree that this time passed very quickly. Now remember the best moments of your student life: not only lectures, exams, but also many bright moments – new meetings, friends, rest, journeys. Student life is the best time of our life; it is a special state of mind, the best time for self-fulfilment and self-determination, realization of one’s dreams. I am convinced that you will remember with nostalgia and pleasure the time spent at Ternopil Medical University. Many moments of this student life you lose forever, but on the other hand this day is joyful because it gives the light of hope and the joy of meeting the future. Today is the moment when you enter your broad and independent life path.

990 graduates are present here. All of you start your professional activity tomorrow. It depends on you only which direction to go. I want to warn you that your life path will not always be smooth and even. There will be obstacles, difficulties, and challenges. We believe that you will follow your life path confidently and decisively, achieve many glorious victories and peaks of professional success.

Today’s graduates are truly unique. A new profession of paramedic is now available in Ukraine for the first time. Tomorrow 29 of our graduates, specialists in emergency medical care, join ambulance teams and work in emergency departments of hospitals. They have acquired the knowledge and skills to provide medical care in emergencies. People’s lives will depend on these specialists several times a day. In addition to professional knowledge essential for paramedics, they were taught to be stress resistant, to properly navigate the situation, to communicate effectively in a team. They have passed dozens of trainings, courses, participated in professional competitions and are very much needed by the emergency medical service. Another group of unique professionals who have received their degrees today are masters in Public Health. When we talk about public health, we mean disease prevention, health promotion and life expectancy. It is also health management, epidemiology. Masters in public health will manage these important issues for the society.

Today the graduates of our university are traditionally doctors, pharmacists, nurses, dentists, physical therapists. Dear friends, you must remember that you have chosen the most respected and noble profession. We are sure that it was your dream. We urge you never to betray your profession, to develop your skills, and then you will live in harmony with yourself. There is a famous speech by Steve Jobs to Stanford University graduates. It has an important idea: “Remember that your time is limited, so do not allow yourself such a luxury as living someone else’s life, do not fall into the trap of dogma, which says that you should live guided by other people’s thoughts, do not let the noise of other people’s thoughts interrupt your inner voice. And the most importantly – have the courage to listen to your inner voice, your heart and intuition. If you love your profession, perform your professional duties honestly, if your profession provides you with decent material support for you and your family, then you will live in harmony with yourself and the world. In order to be in demand in your profession, you have to improve constantly. Medicine is a branch that is constantly evolving, diagnostics is developing rapidly, new mechanisms of pathogenesis of diseases emerge. Therefore, you need to develop your skills all the time, read the latest medical news and learn new technologies, stimulate yourself to improve professionally. You are intended to complete the medical reform started in Ukraine and the future of Ukraine’s safety depends on you.

We live in an era of globalism and each of you has the opportunity to live and work in any part of the world. You will be invited to work in Eastern Europe. Many of our graduates are highly qualified specialists in Western Europe, the United States or Canada. I urge you, if there is an opportunity to train, work abroad and learn advanced methods of treatment, diagnosis, try to return home, because your people need you the most.

You have chosen the most altruistic profession and people are waiting for your help. There are many romantics among you now. All your dreams will come true. Don’t be disappointed if you don’t reach great career heights. More than 30,000 graduates have graduated from our university during its 63 year history. Most of them, as well as graduates of other medical universities, work at the primary and secondary levels of medical care. They are the basis of our medicine and the health and lives of many people depend on them. Many people have been fortunate to be healthy through their efforts.

There are two categories of people who determine the trajectory of personal development, and this day do depends on them. I am talking about your teachers and parents. During your studies at our university you gained fundamental knowledge. Remember those who shared their knowledge and experience with you every day, who shared their souls. Appreciate your teachers. Your success will be the best reward and gratitude to them.

Your parents came here today to support you. They have been your support throughout your studies. Many of them have worked hard to help you with medical education. They rejoiced in your successes and were saddened by your failures. Maybe this holiday is even greater for them than for you. Send the deepest gratitude to your parents.

Dear parents, we sincerely congratulate you on the holiday. Your children will soon start working independently and we are sure you will be proud of their professional success. Now it’s their turn to help you.

All this time you studied together with international students. You now see seventeen flags of foreign countries. This means that today students, who came to study from seventeen countries, will receive diplomas as well. In a few days they will go home. But I hope that they will remember Ukraine and our university, as well as become unofficial diplomats of our homeland.

Stay desperate, stay romantics, dream even if sometimes these dreams are utopian, do not bend under the circumstances, strive for success – and you will conquer this world. Achieve great success, do good. We wish you good luck, a wide life path. May the Lord help you in your professional practice. Glory to the graduates of Ternopil National Medical University! Glory to Ukraine!” said Mykhaylo Korda, the Rector of TNMU.
