Pathological Physiology Olympiad at I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University
On March 19, the Department of Pathological Physiology at I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University hosted the first round of the All-Ukrainian Olympiad in Pathological Physiology. A total of 21 third-year medical students took part in the competition. The selection criteria included full attendance of practical classes, a high average academic score, and successful completion of all practical skills required by the curriculum.

The Olympiad consisted of three tasks. The first task involved solving a highly complex clinical case, in which participants were required to identify symptom complexes in the context of comorbidity and justify their decisions through the lens of pathogenesis. Students also had to determine and substantiate the need for additional diagnostic markers. This task allowed participants to demonstrate not only their knowledge of pathogenesis at the cellular and molecular levels but also their ability to define pathogenetic principles of treatment, thus reflecting their level of clinical thinking and creativity.
The second task was theoretical and required participants to create a schematic representation of the pathogenesis of anaphylactic-type allergy, accounting for its stages and the nature of its pathological manifestations.
The third task was a test assessment, which included questions similar to the “Krok 1” exam format. All tasks were evaluated using a 12-point grading system. Objectivity was ensured through confidentiality (each work was coded with a password) and cross-evaluation by all members of a competent jury, which included: Prof. M. Khara (Chair), Prof. O. Denefil (Head of the Department), Assoc. Prof. R. Usynskyi, Assoc. Prof. S. Charnosh, and Assoc. Prof. V. Pelykh.

Based on the results of the participants’ and jury’s diligent work, the winners were determined as follows:
- 1st place: B. Yurchenko (group MM-311) and O. Voroshchuk (group MM-320)
- 2nd place: O. Kitovskyi (group MM-316) and L. Vlokh (group MM-309)
- 3rd place: V. Hural (group MM-315), D. Shovykov (group MM-316), and D. Dolhopolov (group MM-302)
The department staff congratulate the winners and prize recipients!
All participants were awarded certificates of appreciation.
