CADUS Trainings for TNMU Students

On November 17, 2023, TNMU was visited by representatives of the Berlin office of the CADUS charitable and independent aid organisation. CADUS manager Louis Kennedy and medical training coordinator Ed Young met with TNMU rector Mykhaylo Korda, discussed training activities at TNMU and agreed on further cooperation.

International non-governmental non-profit public organization CADUS has been operating for nine years. Its main office is located in Berlin.

In Ukraine, CADUS began operations at the beginning of March 2022. The experience of the first charity missions, cooperation with volunteer organizations and medical institutions proved the need for special training in providing first aid in emergency situations – in case of gunshot wounds, injuries, burns, etc. If at first these were situational classes, then later they turned into a full-fledged professional training program, which includes 8 training courses and covers a wide range of medical services – from trauma treatment to rescue measures in emergency situations. Today, more than 1,500 people – residents of Kyiv, Lviv, Zaporizhzhia, Kramatorsk, Mykolaiv, and others – completed the training courses.

TNMU concluded a CADUS cooperation agreement at the beginning of September 2023.

On November 13, on the basis of the Simulation Training Centre of TNMU, representatives of CADUS conducted the training “Initial Trauma Management” for employees of the Department of Emergency and Simulation Medicine, specialists of the Simulation Training Centre and other interested persons. It was aimed at mastering the basics of trauma treatment and was based on instructions for tactical assistance to the wounded in combat. The participants of the training learned how to provide self-help and care for injuries, using the tools included in the standard set of the IFAK individual first-aid kit, learned how to quickly assess the condition of a victim with an injury, use a tourniquet, apply haemostatic and haemostatic bandages and tamponade wounds, mastered the basic methods of opening airways, safe lifting and moving of victims, etc.

On November 14, representatives of CADUS held a training course “Blast Injuries”, the purpose of which is to provide participants with basic knowledge about the mechanisms of blast injuries, types of blast injuries and their treatment options, to form the skills necessary for effective recognition, assessment and treatment of blast injuries.

All CADUS training participants noted the high competence of the instructors, proper material and technical support, the quality of the classes conducted with a minimum of theory and a maximum of practicing skills and practical scenarios, which corresponds to modern guidelines for tactical medicine and pre-medical care in case of injury.

During the meeting, the parties agreed to hold 5 more trainings for TNMU students – future doctors and paramedics, scheduled for December 2023 – January 2024:

• Initial Trauma Management

• Mechanical Ventilation

• Medical Educator

• Blast Injuries

• Mass Casualty Management.

Each of them will last 2 days. Groups of 25 to 30 people will be formed to participate in the trainings. It is assumed that 150 students will be covered by the training. CADUS trainers are experienced paramedic specialists from the USA, Great Britain, and Spain. Special emphasis will be placed on the specifics of providing pre-medical care in the conditions of hostilities. Training takes place on the basis of TNMU Simulation Training Centre.

In addition, representatives of CADUS offered to decide on the topics of future courses of interest to TNMU. For this purpose, the university will conduct a survey based on the results of which CADUS will be able to develop and propose new topics for trainings.
