Representatives of TNMU Institute of Nursing Took Part in the “Clinical Leadership in Nursing. The Experience of Ireland” Seminar

On May 17-25, 2024, on the initiative of the Centre for Nursing Development and its head, Kateryna Komar, with the support of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, a training seminar “Clinical leadership in nursing. Experience of Ireland” was held in Dublin. The Director of TNMU Academic and Research Institute of Nursing Svitlana Danchak and Deputy-Director Liudmyla Mazur took part in the seminar as part of a delegation of representatives of educational, medical and preventive institutions of Ukraine.

The participants visited the Office of the Chief Nurse, Department of Health and met Ms Rachel Kenna, Chief Nursing Officer. Rachel Kenna and the staff of the office talked about the structure, tasks and future directions of the health care system of Ireland, the structure and tasks of the office of the chief nursing specialist, the national priorities of nursing and midwifery, as well as the peculiarities of the formation of the report of the expert assessment body for nursing and midwifery. Kateryna Komar spoke about the prospects for the development of nursing in Ukraine and introduced the areas of work of the Centre for Nursing Development.

The office of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland was visited too, where the members of the delegation got acquainted with such areas of work of NMBI as the regulation of nursing and midwifery in Ireland, the structure of the office of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate education, educational and professional standards, as well as features of the continuous professional development system. The information was provided by Ms Sheila McClelland, CEO NMBI, and NMBI staff.

The participants of the meeting also visited the Beaumont Hospital, which is the basic medical institution of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). Sinead Connolly, Director of Nursing, addressed the delegates with a welcome speech and information about the work of Beaumont Hospital. Petrina Donnelly introduced the group of hospitals of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, Susan Hawkshaw introduced the nursing practice development program, and advanced nurse practitioners spoke to the delegates.

The knowledge gained became a valuable experience for understanding the prospects for the development of nursing in the education and health care system, as well as for the introduction of leadership programs in nursing in Ukraine.
